Zurich City Add-On

Less than an hour away from the mountains, Zurich is an international city in a phenomenal location surrounded by peaks and lakes, combining an original, urban buzz with natural wonders.

The city plays host to countless events, festivals and cultural points of interest all year long and happens to be the first or last stop of any rail journey back to Zurich International Airport.

Often ranked amongst the top cities in the world for quality of life, Zurich is one of Switzerland’s key centres for culture, economy and nightlife. It exemplifies the “boutique city” with a high quality of living surrounded by nature, traditional ethics and some of the best restaurants anywhere in the world, but without the big city attitude that can be overwhelming.

Zurich is a year-round city, but winter is especially wonderful as there are plenty of activities to get stuck into - not all of them have to be active, if it's peace and quiet you are after. There are plenty of spas and Swiss hammams to retreat to, while everyone else can grab a hot chocolate and eat cheese fondue!

"Zurich is one of the nicest places in Europe to visit in its own right - a trendy, beautiful, traditional Swiss city which also happens to be one of the most accessible to the Swiss Alps. Lakefront views over the mountains are simply awesome."

  • Christmas Markets – one of the main attractions to Zurich are the fantastic markets from November to December: Wlenachtsdorf (one of the largest), Christkindllmarkt at Zurich Main Station (one of the largest indoor markets in Europe), Nlederdof (Zurich’s oldest and most romantic – located in the Old Town) and Winterthur (100 chalets try to outshine each other with festive decorations) to name just a few!
  • Bahnofstrasse – the Bahnhofstrasse is one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Europe, filled with fashion, art and Swiss specialities.
  • Old Town – one of Europe's most well preserved, featuring medieval houses along its countless winding and narrow lanes.
  • Grossmunster – one of Zurich's most famous landmarks. The accessible Karlstrum tower offers extraordinary views over the Old Town, the Limmat River and the lake.
  • National Museum Zurich – this spectacular building is next to the main station and reminiscent of a fairytale castle. It houses the country's largest cultural and historical collection.
  • FIFA World Football Museum – along with the original World Cup trophy, the museum illustrates how the game stirs emotions on a daily basis in an interactive exhibition.
  • Zurich-West – formerly an industrial area that has been transformed into a hip district, with design stores, contemporary art galleries, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
  • Zurich Opera House – although it seats over 1,100 spectators, the ZOH is one of the smallest international opera houses.
