Banff

If you're into outdoor adventure then Banff is sure to be on your radar.

Effortlessly cool with a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere, Banff is a fantastic base to explore the nearby resorts of Mt Norquay, Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise. All three resorts are on one great value lift pass and there's a free ski shuttle to get you to the slopes and back each day.

Aside from the combined 7,748 acres of skiable terrain, 274 runs and nine metre average annual snowfall, the town is home to a large range of good value accommodation, bustling shops and vibrant après bars along the lively main street. Surrounded on all sides by mountains, there are few more scenic towns in North America - no wonder many of the hotels feature rooftop hot tubs!

As a year-round adventure destination, the skiing is just the beginning - off the slopes, there's everything from ice climbing to hot springs - and despite drawing outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world, the town retains its authentic Canadian vibe. You're as likely to drink a beer in a bar with a local as you are with tourists.

Lake Louise

Alberta's largest ski area and its most stunning scenery.

The furthest of the 'Big 3' resorts from Banff town, most people choose to stay in Lake Louise for its remote location and unforgettable backdrop.

Don't let the scenery distract you from the skiing - the resort boasts 139 runs spread over 4,200 acres, and while it caters to all abilities, the super-challenging steeps will test the strongest of skiers.

Stay in the small resort village or spend a bit more and experience the opulence of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for direct access to the lake itself, which is open for ice skating and ice fishing in the winter. The expansive wilderness surrounding the resort is ideal for dog sledding, snowshoeing and horse-drawn sleigh rides and you can still drive or catch the bus to Banff Sunshine and Mt Norquay for more skiing and to Banff for a wider range of restaurants and bars.

Jasper

Unique, uncrowded and hugely welcoming.

Ski holidays in Jasper combine North America's best ski town and most affordable ski resort. The town of Jasper has a wonderful sense of community where the locals go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Just a 15 minute drive away, the Marmot Basin ski area delivers a surprising amount of terrain for such a small mountain.

40% of the terrain is rated black or double-black diamond, with the most thrilling runs found in the Tres Hombres area, so advanced and expert skiers have a wealth of wide-open powder-filled bowls, steep chutes and tree-lined gullies to play in. There's still enough diversity for all abilities to have a good time over a short stay.

While the ski area doesn't compare in size to the resorts of Banff and Lake Louise, there are some must-do activities such as the Maligne Canyon guided walk. The deepest canyon in the Rockies is filled with frozen waterfalls and surreal ice formations which make it a magical place to explore.

Ski All Three on an Alberta Rockies Ski Safari

Can't decide? Why not try all three on one incredible trip?

If you like the sound of all three bases and you have a bit more time for your holiday, our Alberta Rockies Ski Safari is one of the most affordable ways to ski, see and do more than you could imagine in 12-14 nights.

For the complete Alberta winter experience, stay in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, ski all four ski areas and try some of the most Instagrammable activities out there. We recommend 4-5 nights in each base, starting in Lake Louise before driving to Jasper and then back to Banff before flying home, but all our holidays are entirely flexible so the choice of resorts, activities and accommodation is entirely up to you.

With skiing for all abilities and endless opportunities for off-the-slopes fun, it’s perfect for couples, families and mixed groups with non-skiers. Just don't expect to do it in a hurry, with some of the world's best scenery surrounding you at every moment, it's hard to keep the camera away.
