Why ski touring?

If you are looking for a new challenge then Ski Touring, Backcountry Skiing and Avalanche Skills Training could inspire your skiing and riding and take it to a new level of enjoyment.

Earn your turns!

We have teamed up with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures - one of Canada's premier providers of ski mountaineering, ice climbing and backcountry skiing and riding in the Canadian Rockies. They are known for quality mountain experiences, safety and well organised itineraries, and have some of the best mountain guides in the industry.

They offer beginner, intermediate and advanced programs for backcountry skiers and riders - so whether it is your first time in the backcountry or you are a seasoned expert there is a program to suit you.

Courses are generally run on set dates and we will organise your trip around the course dates. We recommend you take a few days to warm up in the resorts of Banff or Lake Louise before the course.

Backcountry skiing courses

Backcountry Skiing Courses

Backcountry Ski Skills Level 1 - intro to backcountry skiing and riding - this weekend course in the Canadian Rockies is a great way to get started!

Backcountry Ski Skills Level 2 - leading day trips - this course will develop your leadership skills for travelling in non-glaciated backcountry terrain.

Backcountry Ski Skills Level 3 - winter camping for the backcountry skier and rider - Backcountry Ski Skills 3 will continue to refine the travel and leadership skills developed on the Backcountry Ski Skills 2 course but will focus on building the skills required to camp and cook in the winter environment.

Avalanche safety courses

Avalanche Safety Courses

Avalanches are the greatest hazard facing 'out of bounds' backcountry skiers and riders, 'sledders' and ice climbers. The knowledge gained from Yamnuska's avalanche safety courses will significantly improve your safety margins and introduce you to risk assessment.

AST1 - an intensive 2 day course involving a full classroom day then a field training and study day. Courses in Canmore and Calgary.

AST2 - four days of advanced avalanche training and study based in the Bow Valley. One advanced classroom day then three days out in the field.

Ski Mountaineering

Ski Mountaineering

For experienced skiers and riders:

Intro to Ski Mountaineering Course - learn the skills of glacier ski mountaineering on the Wapta Icefields.

11'000's Ski Ascents - Mt Hector - along the Icefields Parkway, just North of Lake Louise, this majestic peak was the second Canadian Rockies 11,000er to be climbed in 1895. Standing on the summit you will be following in the footsteps of some of the Canadian Rockies' most famous mountaineers. You will enjoy amazing panoramic views of the Lake Louise group and the Wapta Icefields on this trip.

Mt Columbia Ski Expedition - this trip is an excellent choice for adventurers looking to learn the skills involved in successfully planning and completing ski expeditions.

Hut-to-Hut and Winter Camping Ski Traverses

Hut-to-Hut and Winter Camping Ski Traverses

The Wapta Traverse - the classic hut to hut traverse of the Canadian Rockies - these are 4-day and 6-day programs.

Bow to Yoho Advanced Ski Week - an incredible adventure east to west across the Wapta Icefields! Ski over massive glaciers laid down during the last ice age, cross the continental divide, all the while surrounded by the majestic peaks that are the namesake of this range!
