Huge amounts of snow in 2019, including up to 15 feet in February alone, has seen ski resorts in California shoot to the top of the snowfall charts in North America.

Resorts including Mammoth, Squaw Valley and Heavenly have had metres of fresh white stuff weekly. In fact, even the desert has had a dusting!

Mammoth is now the snowiest resort in North America (only just pipped by Myoko in Japan for total snow across all our programme) with close to 14 metres this season.

This has meant a few challenges for mountain operations...

But the whole team pulled together to help...

Ensuring as much terrain has stayed open as possible, with the top expected to open today after close to three metres since last Wednesday.

This February is officially Mammoth's snowiest on record, beating the previous record from 1986 with close to seven metres at the summit - and it's only the 19th!

The sheer amount of snow has led to the resort announcing they'll stay open for skiing and riding until 4 July.

Further north at Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley has also had an astonishing amount of snow in February, surpassing the average snowfall for the month (just under two metres) in the first five days and more recently also setting a February record with 625cm so far.

As in Mammoth, Squaw has faced some issues during the snowiest days...

But the resulting conditions more than made up for it...

Nearby Northstar isn't far behind Squaw Valley in the snow stakes, receiving 1138cm to date. On 14 February the snowpack was measured at 159% of the average for the year and consistent snow since then has meant plenty of fun in the trees...

Conditions are much the same in South Lake Tahoe, where Heavenly seems to be having a good time despite some challenging conditions. "This entire month is unreal! Truly endless blower pow.‬ The dig out continues!"

There's Still Time to Book

We don't expect that Mammoth will be the only resort to extend their season this winter, so there's still plenty of time to get out there and experience this unreal California snow. Call us on 01273 224060 or request a quotation.

One of the handful of non-skiers before joining Ski Safari, I've now skied in North America, Europe and Asia and can't imagine a winter without at least one ski trip!
