Sun Valley is America's original ski resort famously frequented by Hollywood stars since 1936 and where the chairlift was invented.

Sun Valley Resort is the name given to a collection of buildings which include the Sun Valley Inn and Sun Valley Lodge as well as a small pedestrianised village with its famous theatre. It is a self-contained complex a 5-minute drive or shuttle from the slopes.

Today you are more likely to stay in Ketchum, a western town with a funky edge, just a mile or so from Sun Valley Resort. The original ski hill, Dollar Mountain, which is close to Sun Valley Resort is now predominantly a beginner area. The main ski area is at Bald Mountain, above the town of Ketchum. Here there is a huge go-anywhere bowl and a number of thrilling tree-lined descents to the two base areas River Run and Warm Springs.

Self-catering accommodation is located either at River Run, Warm Springs or in the town of Ketchum, which has some superb drinking holes and eateries packed with character and interest.

Sun Valley has played a major part in America's skiing history and whilst the ski area is not the largest or most challenging, the resort should be on everyone's list. We recommend it is visited on a Ski Safari, combining it with stays at Jackson Hole and/or Big Sky.
