How Green?

Ski Safari asked whether the hotel is a member of an Environmental Accreditation Body or whether it has any official environmental accreditation?

Yes. The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club is Audubon Certified, which means we adhere to environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical reduction, water conservation, etc.We are also Ocean Wise certified.  Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to help restaurants and their customers make environmentally friendly seafood choices.  (http://www.oceanwisecanada.com/).

Ski Safari asked whether the hotel has an environmental/responsible tourism policy?

Yes. Please see Fairmont Hotels and Resorts award winning Green Partnership Guide.

Ski Safari asked whether there are there any particular features of the hotel that limit environmental impact e.g. usage of renewable energy sources, waste management and recycling programmes etc?

Yes. Recycling is conducted throughout our hotel.  We also purchase wind-power.  Fairmont's recent purchase of Eco-Logo certified wind power for 249 check in computers will result in a greenhouse gas reduction of almost 100 tonnes over the next year.

Our hotel has been retrofitted with energy efficient lighting, low flow shower heads and low capacity toilets.  We also recirculate water through the hotel as part of our cooling system.  Since 1999, Fairmont Hotels in British Columbia have saved in excess of $700,000 in total electricity savings. As a result of the 2,011,599 kWh reduction in energy use by Fairmont Hotels & Resort, there was a C02 reduction of 505 tonnes. This is the equivalent of taking 215 cars off the road or planting 1060 acres of trees.

Ski Safari asked whether the hotel promotes sustainable tourism, e.g. do you source local food products and support local suppliers?

Yes. When available, we purchase the majority of our produce from local farmers in the Pemberton area (20 minutes north of Whistler) and in the Greater Vancouver Region.

We have our own rooftop herb garden where we grow most of the herbs used in the kitchen, from garlic and dill to parsley, mint and watercress.  There are over 25 herbs in our garden that our chefs use on a daily basis.

We are also Ocean Wise certified.  Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to help restaurants and their customers make environmentally friendly seafood choices.  (www.oceanwisecanada.com).

Ski Safari asked whether the hotel is involved in any local or national social projects e.g. community projects, housing schemes for employees etc.

Yes. We provide affordable, local staff housing a short walk from The Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
